‘Why we want Umana as Akpabio’s successor’

Michael Bush is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ibom Millennium, In this Interview with UDEME UTIP, he speaks on 2015 politics in the state.
What is your group, Ibom Millennium, all about?
Ibom Millennium is the group set up to actualise the possibility of having Umana Okon Umana to continue the excellent work of Governor Godswill Akpabio after his administration. I can remember that we were the first political group that announced it. Well, this is how far we have gone and we are still on course. People are buying into the project and we are still on auto pilot.

There is this rumour that the Governor Godswill Akpabio went with some people from the state to present secretary to the State Governor (SSG), Mr. Umana Umana, your principal, to President Goodluck Jonathan as his successor in 2015 and the president rejected him.
Have you ever wondered why everybody in Akwa Ibom, especially if he or she is interested in 2015 governorship election, is talking about or against Umana? I think this is a pointer to the fact that he is the man to beat and, by the grace of God, he will be. Such a thing never happened and it will never happen. It does not happen like that in politics. I believe strongly that what the rumour carriers are simply looking for is to pull our legs, to expose our game plan, so we won’t join issues with them. We are facing our jobs but I want to say again that the rumour is a cheap lie. All these will culminate on the day of nomination. I can assure you that Umana will not only win the nomination to stand the election on the PDP platform but will win the governorship seat of the state in 2015.

Some people are agitating for zoning of political positions, especially the governorship position. Why are you against zoning?
Talking about the issue of zoning, what does it really mean? It means that nobody from other regions should contest. Even if it succeeds, you may find out that mediocrity is working against excellence. I still believe in it if you want it that way but my own belief is, zone it to excellence, the best man who can do the job, not because I’m from there or here. After all, if we say let it go to the best quality, quality can come from the minority and majority alike. When we insist on zoning, what if the area a position is zoned to does not have a good representative? Do we just pick anybody because of zoning?

I have said this before; I have come to believe that it is possible for an Ibibio man to enjoy more under an Annang governorship as it is now than he did during the Ibibio governorship and vice-versa. It will even be possible for an Eket man to enjoy more under another government other than Eket. I can tell you that Akwa Ibom will be better and people will enjoy Umana; I can say this because I have been privileged over the last seven years to work closely with him. He is one man that I know will treat Akwa Ibom South better than an Eket son. I believe that clearly that after his rule, we will also have people from other zones who will come and treat the Ibibio well just like the present governor.
