Akwa Ibom PDP Zone Ticket to Ikot Ekpene

The People Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has zoned their 2010 gubernatorial ticket to Akwa Ibom North–West senatorial district.
This decision was taken by the State working Committee of the PDP in the state, thereby not leaving the governorship primary as an all comer affair.
The Chairman of PDP in the state Prince Uwem Ita Etuk responding to an address presented by the chairman of the Federated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mr. Ernest Akpan said that the gubernatorial ticket of the party has been zoned to the district in line with political understanding within the party, He stated that the decision was in the interest of peace, stability and party cohesion.
Prince Etuk further explained that Akwa Ibom north having produced a two term Chief Executive of the state was not eligible for the race in 2011. According to the statement, “Akwa Ibom North-East (Uyo) senatorial district had taken its turn by producing former governor Victor Attah for eight years”.
“The PDP has therefore in its wisdom, which is in line with prevailing political understanding within the party to zone the governorship ticket to Akwa Ibom North-West (Ikot Ekpene) senatorial district again in 2011. At the end of Governor Akpabio’s second term in 2015, It will be the turn of Akwa Ibom South (Eket) senatorial district to produce the state Chief Executive Officer”, he continued.
He noted that wards and local government chapters of the party have been directed to promote permanent zoning system in their areas for peace and stability to reign.
A political analyst Dr Joe Essien who accompanied the PDP chairman said that the party decision is a big boost to the second term aspiration of Governor Godswill Akpabio. He affirmed that Governor Akpabio is constitutionally empowered to seek a re-election at the end of his first term in 2011.
